Undeterred, Dan proposes they produce their ain album together, to exist recorded alive during the summer at various public locations around the city. During this fourth dimension, Dan and Gretta bail both personally and professionally, and she takes his teenage daughter Violet, a fledgling guitarist, under her wing and encourages her to play on the album.

When Gretta sees Dave accepting an award on tv, she criticizes him for selling out to the music manufacture and, with the help of Steve, she expresses her grievances with him in a vocal which she records on his phonation mail. Director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Again several years before he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[2] The story was partly inspired by his own experiences as a musician in a band,[two] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of tape labels during the 1990s, which formed the footing of Dan's character.[4] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Tin can a Vocal Relieve Your Life?, before he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to work the music around the story, instead of the other way around."[4] The script's style of featuring songs as a natural element of the story was inspired past the 1954 Judy Garland musical movie A Star Is Born, and is also employed in Carney's earlier moving-picture show One time (2007).[5] Carney showtime pitched the film in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the picture alongside Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose production company Exclusive Media financed the film's US$8 million budget.[ii]

Before casting Keira Knightley as Gretta, Carney considered casting a popular singer such as Adele in the primary role, as well equally a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at one point attached to the project.[2] [6] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the office past preparation with a vocal coach and learning how to play a guitar.[vii] Mark Ruffalo was Carney's first selection for the role of Dan,[ii] and agreed to star in the film later Carney sent him the outset draft of the screenplay.[6] Vocalizer Adam Levine was also the only person Carney considered casting as Dave, and won the function after talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue as an audition;[viii] he declined to exist paid for actualization in the film.[9] Although he had had minor acting parts on idiot box earlier, Begin Over again marked his outset role in a picture.[viii] Carney approached James Corden to appear in the film afterwards admiring Corden'south performance in the lead role in a Broadway production of One Homo, Ii Guvnors.[10]

Main photography of the motion-picture show began in New York City on July ii, 2012,[eleven] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to pic in Manhattan'south lesser known neighborhoods that would be more recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Hamlet, the East Village, Times Foursquare, and Washington Square Park.[13] [fourteen] Rather than performing alive during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In order to save money on hiring a full crew and extras, some scenes—including one in Times Square—were shot late at night with a handheld camera.[2] The rooftop location near the Empire Country Building is located at 28 West 36th St.[15] [16] [17] [18]

Carney's criticism of Knightley [edit]

During a series of interviews to promote his film Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley'southward performance and comportment while making Begin Once again. When asked nigh the disquisitional reaction to Sing Street by The Contained, Carney responded unprompted that "information technology's a small-scale personal moving-picture show with no Keira Knightleys in information technology. It'south actually rewarding."[19] In the same interview, Carney also referred to her repeatedly equally a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally every bit an actress since babyhood, proverb "I'll never brand a film with supermodels again." He likewise criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, saying, "I just think with Keira it was like asking her to exercise something that she could not do."[20] Though he did non specifically proper noun Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his desire to make Sing Street came from his "feel of working, let's confront it, with a model on my terminal movie".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Marker Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their support for her afterward Carney's comments.[22]

Carney later tweeted a public apology saying he felt like "a complete idiot" and proverb that Knightley was "nada merely professional and dedicated" during the filming of the movie.[23]

In 2019, when asked about Carney'south comments, Knightley accepted his amends and revealed that she was not shocked by his earlier comments as they had non gotten along during filming.[24] [25]

Begin Again received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 83%, based on 169 reviews, with an average rating of 6.90/x. The website'due south critical consensus reads, "Writer-director John Carney's return to musical drama isn't quite as stiff as it was with Once, but thanks to mannerly work from its well-matched leads, Brainstorm Once more is difficult to resist."[46] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 62 out of 100, based on reviews from 39 critics, indicating "by and large favorable reviews".[47]

Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers gave Begin Once more three out of four stars, praising the "subtle magic" of the lead actors' performances and Carney's cosmos of "surreal, enchanting loveliness" without being overly sentimental.[48] Ian Freer of Empire awarded the motion-picture show iv out of five stars, describing information technology as "lovely stuff, winningly played, open up-hearted and guaranteed to slap on a smile on a mild summertime night."[49] In a review for Variety, Peter Debruge wrote that "Gregg Alexander'southward music is undeniably the best matter" about the film, which "lays emotions on the line and so drives them dwelling with music."[50] The Hollywood Reporter 's David Rooney praised the "disarming emotional candor and intimacy" of Carney's script and the chemistry betwixt Knightley and Ruffalo,[51] while David Edelstein of New York enjoyed Ruffalo's "very funny" performance and Knightley's "surprisingly sweetness singing vocalism".[52]

The Los Angeles Times 's Kenneth Turan, on the other manus, opined that the story and performances felt contrived, and that the picture show as a whole failed to print every bit much every bit Carney's previous musical picture show Once. [53] Similarly, A. O. Scott of The New York Times wrote that Brainstorm Again was a "disappointing, overly produced follow-up" to Once and found information technology "not very good, but ... kind of enjoyable."[54] In a review for The Guardian, Paul MacInnes awarded the film 2 out of 5 stars and described it as "a movie obsessed with actuality simply equally phoney every bit a Miley Cyrus dance routine."[55] The Chicago Lord's day-Times critic Bruce Ingram also found the film hypocritical, noting "the slightly bogus vibe" of the vocal performances that had been recorded in a studio only were meant to be played live.[56]
